A Special Educational Needs (SEN) Case Officer is the crucial link in ensuring children and young people with SEN receive the support they need to thrive.
Acting as the primary point of contact for families, educational settings, and health and social care services, SEN Case Officers manage the complex administrative processes that underpin Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs). Their work ensures compliance with the Children’s & Families Act 2014 and the SEN Code of Practice 2015 while providing meaningful support to the young people and families they serve.
As an SEN Case Officer, you’ll maintain and manage a caseload, overseeing the development, review, and updating of EHCPs to reflect the evolving needs of children and young people. You’ll coordinate and facilitate multi-agency meetings, such as annual reviews, ensuring all stakeholders are informed and engaged in decision-making. Clear and effective communication will be at the heart of your work, fostering positive relationships with families and advocating for their needs.
Your role involves keeping meticulous records, processing documentation efficiently, and ensuring all activities align with statutory regulations and local policies. Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with educational institutions, health professionals, and social care providers to deliver a coordinated approach to SEN support. Additionally, you’ll provide families with guidance and resources, helping them navigate the often-complex processes involved in securing and maintaining SEN provisions.
An SEN Case Officer needs to balance empathy and professionalism. Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities are essential, as is a keen understanding of SEN and the statutory assessment process. Excellent verbal and written communication skills will help you explain complex information sensitively and clearly to families and professionals alike. Experience in education, health, or social care is highly valuable, as is knowledge of relevant legislation.
